KARACHI: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has extended its deadline to finalize the decision of giving away rights of the Pakistan Super League (PSL), leaving the bidders to wait till August 18.

Two companies, Aman Foundation and Nobel Electronice (Haier), had submitted bids in order to obtain rights of the PSL.

However, the delay was seen in bad light by Haier who felt the reason was to accommodate the other company; the PSL bid committee officials have ridiculed such sentiments.

Earlier, the PCB had placed an advertisement inviting bids for management rights, broadcasting rights, media rights, sponsorship rights, team franchise rights, ticket rights and merchandising rights of the planned PSL.

The technical and financial bids from interested parties were to be opened on August 6 and 8.

“We’ve decided to extend the deadline to August 18 so that we can closely examine all the documents of the interested parties,” an official from the PSL bid committee told The Express Tribune.

“One needs to be certain before awarding such a big contract, which will expand over 15 years. The committee wants to ensure that the PSL rights go to a competent bidder because that company will have the responsibility of running the T20 league for 1.5 decades.”

Meanwhile, there have been some serious reservations regarding the bid from Aman Foundation, with critics saying that being a non-profit organisation, their bidding raises questions on their integrity.

When the PCB officials were contacted on the issue, one of the legal department representatives explained that the chartered documents of an organisation decides what it can and cannot do.

“Non-profit organisations can participate if they don’t share the profits with its members and employees, and only spend those funds on causes like of education, poverty, health etc,” the official explained.
